Raghavendra enters both semifinals

BANGALORE: It was a long day for S. Raghavendra, who played two three setters almost back-to-back to stormed into both the boys under-16 and under-18 singles semifinals of the KEF Holding AITA Talent Series junior tennis championship at KIMS courts here on Wednesday.

He stunned the third seed, Roop Kumar 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 in the boys’ under-18 singles quarterfinal. Earlier in the day, he stopped the fifth seed Sai Akruth 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4) in under-16 singles.

The top seed in the under-16 singles, Om Dalvi cruised past Sai Akruth 6-3, 6-2 to the semifinals. He too made the under-18 singles semifinals with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Rohan Goankar.

The seventh seed, Shruthi Prashanth pulled off the biggest upset of the day in the girls section, when she shocked the top seed, Vidya Bharath 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 and entered the under-18 singles semifinals.

She, earlier, qualified for the under-16 singles semifinals.

The local girls, S.P. Ritu, Preethi Gokhale and Preethi Ujjani also made the semifinals in both the under-16 and under-18 singles.

The results (all quarterfinals): Boys: Under-16: Om Dalvi bt Sarthak Siddarth 6-3, 6-2; S. Raghavendra bt Sai Akurth 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(4); Rohan Goankar bt K. Pratheek 6-1, 6-2; Nikhil Reddy bt Akshay 6-0, 6-0.

Under-18: Rashien Samuel bt Ganga Singh 6-4, 6-1; S. Raghavendra bt Roop Kumar 3-6, 6-2, 7-5; Vishnu K. Jinan bt Nikhil Reddy 4-6, 6-1, 6-3; Om Dalvi bt Rohan Goankar 6-3, 7-5.

Girls: Under-16: Preethi Ujjani bt Sophia Faizal 6-0, 6-2; Preethi Gokhale bt Anitha Yadav 6-0, 6-0; Shruthi Prashanth bt Shruthi Narayani 6-1, 6-0; S.P. Ritu bt Neesha Menon 6-1, 7-5.

Under-18 singles: Preethi Gokhale bt Lubna Maria 6-0, 6-0; S.P. Ritu bt Shwetha Samuel 6-4, 6-2; Preethi Ujjani bt Shreya Mahadevan 6-0, 6-3; Shruthi Prashanth bt Vidya Bharath 6-1, 1-6, 6-4.
