Poojashree gets past Shaozhuo

NEW DELHI: Wild card Poojashree Venkatesh defeated Liu Shaozhuo of China 6-2, 6-4 to move into the pre-quarterfinals of the $50,000 ITF women’s tennis tournament at the DLTA Complex here on Tuesday.

The 18-year-old Poojashree raced to a 5-1 lead and that set the tempo for the contest. She served well and stroked confidently to ease past the Chinese.

Poojashree, who has ensured herself five WTA points and $760, will be up against the third-seeded Sandra Zahlavova of the Czech Republic in the pre-quarterfinals.

Shalini Sahoo found Emily Webley-Smith of Britain too hot to handle and managed to eke out only three games, all in the first set.

Megan Moulton-Levy of the U.S. defeated the second-seeded Margit Ruutel of Estonia 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. She will meet qualifier Romana Tabakova of Slovakia in the next round.
