KOCHI: Kozhikode’s A. Niji ended the three-year reign of international Nimmy A. George and won her maiden Kerala State women’s chess title at the Cochin University here on Thursday.

Niji defeated Nimmy in the fourth round today, for her big break. “I had lost all my three earlier matches to Nimmy but I was very confident today. I had also prepared well. That worked,” said the 15-year-old, a 12th standard student at Kozhikode’s Saviour HSS.

She was a comfortable winner, clinching 5.5 points from six rounds. Kannur’s E. Sheena was runner-up while Nimmy finished third. The top six players will represent Kerala in the National ‘B’ women’s championship in Kozhikode next month.

Important results (final round): Niji drew with Sheena; Teenu lost to Neenu; Aswathy Balagopalan lost to Nimmy.

Fifth round: Anjana Krishna lost to Niji; Aswahty lost to Teenu; Neenu lost to Sheena.
