Chennai: Madras University Union will have a new multi-purpose indoor stadium within the next 12-18 months. This was announced by S. Ramachandran, vice-chancellor, University of Madras, at a ceremony here on Tuesday, where he and B. Sivanthi Adityan, chairman, Sports Advisory Board, University of Madras, laid the foundation stone for the stadium.

Additionally, Ramachandran and Adityan opened a new Sports Hostel for Women.

The new stadium, constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 3.5 crore, will contain a fully-equipped gymnasium and conference hall, apart from playing arenas and galleries.

“We have to bid farewell to the current stadium with a heavy heart,” Mr. Ramachandran said, tracing its journey from its inception in 1974 through the international contests it hosted, including volleyball at the 1996 South Asian Federation Games. — Sports Reporter
