Motor : Good show by Armaan

CHENNAI: Rising star Armaan Ebrahim won the Grand Race of the fourth round of the Formula Renault V6 Championship at Sepang in Malaysia on Sunday.

Starting second on the grid for the 15-lap race, Armaan shot into the lead at the first corner. From there on, it was a very tight race with James Grunwell and Earl Bamber close behind Armaan for the first few laps.

Armaan opened up a two-second lead after lap 4 and managed to keep the two red cars behind him. Earl Bamber passed James and pressed Armaan for a few laps. Even as James again passed Bamber, Armaan kept his advantage with skillful driving at the corners. Although he lost a little ground on the straights, James was kept at bay. The Indian did not make a single mistake.

In lap 12, James made a desperate move into corner four, but Armaan held his line, cleverly avoided a wild driving Grunwell till the chequered flag. What was particularly creditable in this deserving win was that Armaan was driving a one-year old engine and thus had to take in his stride a lack of straight line speed.

Commenting on his show, Armaan said, “I had a perfect car and it was a perfect race. Yes, I knew that I was down on straight line speed, but was confident enough as I had a lot more speed than Grunwell into the faster corners and under braking into the slower corners. It was just a question of not making a mistake. The team did a great job as usual and I really enjoyed a close race.”

Earlier on Saturday, Armaan, who qualified second for the sprint race, finished second in the actual race after being the quickest in both practice sessions.
