Madras varsity women triumph

CHENNAI: The Madras University women’s team regained the all India inter-zone inter-university table tennis title after a lapse of a year.

In the tournament organised by BIT, Mesara in Ranchi recently, Madras defeated University of Calcutta 3-0 in the final.

U.V. Agni, A.V. Nivedita and N. Sathyabama comprised the team for the final. The other two in the side were J. Swarna and Nishanthi Kumaravel.

In the men’s section, the university finished second, losing 0-3 to Burdwan in the final.

The team did not have the services of two key players — Kalvath Syed Abdul Kadir and Sivananda Sastri. The others who ensured Madras finished as it did last time were E. Prabhakaran, C. Sathiswaran and Vishal Narayanan.

Quarterfinals: Men: Madras bt Punjab 3-1; Women: Madras bt GND University 3-0.

Sandeep-Kumar win

Sandeep Dang and Kumar won the weekly pairs event held at T. Nagar Social Club on Tuesday, scoring 64.26 per cent playing East-West.

Satish Kumar and Sukhanandan won from the North-South direction with a score of 59.13 per cent.

The results: East-West: 1. Sandeep Dang and Kumar, 2. D. Vijay and Chandramouli, 3. V. Suri and Srikrishnan; North-South: 1. Satish Kumar and Sukhanandan, 2. C.V. Kumar and S. Ganesan, 3. G. Raghuraman and S. Kailasam.

Ragul scalps four

Off-spinner P.S. Ragul’s four-wicket haul helped St. John’s (Besant Nagar) bowl Union Christian out for 63 and post an 83-run win in the Sacred Heart city schools under-14 tournament here.

St. John’s (Besant Nagar) 146 for eight in 25 overs (Visvanath 32, Surya Prakash three for 29) bt Union Christian 63 in 23.2 overs (Surya Prakash 29, P.S. Ragul four for 12).

St. John’s IRS (Poonamallee) 106 in 24.2 overs (Dhilkushan 34, Chaitanya three for 22, Rahul three for 14) lost to Velammal International 107 for nine in 24.1 overs (Chaitanya 31).

SBOA MHSS 168 for eight in 25 overs (S. Gautham 48, Chandar three for 20, Karthikraja three for 14) bt Velammal MHSS 96 in 16.5 overs (Venketesh four for 20).

Don Bosco football

Nine teams, comprising the various Don Bosco Youth Centres will take part in the inter-Don Bosco football tournament being organised as part of the platinum jubilee of the Chennai Salesian Province, by the DBYC Broadway on November 22 and 23. The tournament is to be played on a knock-out basis.
