Lahiri pocketed the winner’s purse of Rs. 16,16,500

Naman Dawar returned a total of 13-under 275 to finish second

GREATER NOIDA: His good work in the first three rounds paid dividends for Anirban Lahiri, who cruised to title win in the Rs. one crore BILT Open tournament at the Jaypee Greens Golf Resort here on Sunday.

In the absence of some big names, Lahiri set a new course record of 20-under 268 to bag the winner’s purse of Rs. 16,16,500.

The previous record of 19-under was held by last year’s champion Jyoti Randhawa.

The day started with 45 of the 52 professionals resuming their unfinished third round, which was cut short by smog on Saturday.

At the end of the penultimate round, Lahiri, with a six-under showing, had built a big lead of six strokes.

In the last edition, facing tough competition from the likes of Jeev Milkha Singh and Randhawa, the Bangalore golfer had slipped in the last round after taking a three-stroke lead. This time though, the writing was on the wall.

Lahiri opened the final round with a birdie and hit a spectacular shot that travelled 225 yards to land a foot away from the second hole.

However, the eagle here and two birdies on the fifth and 12th were negated by his four bogies.

“The course played much better this time. I was not thinking about winning, I was trying to finish 24, 25-under. However, I lost my concentration,” said Lahiri after claiming his second professional title.

Naman Dawar returned a total of 13-under 275 to finish second. He owed a bigger part of his achievement to Himmat Singh Rai.

Himmat, who at one stage was four strokes away from leader Lahiri, lost his focus on the back nine to return double bogies on the 14th and 16th.

The scores: Anirban Lahiri (66, 65, 66, 71) 268; Naman Dawar (72, 65, 68, 70) 275; Digvijay Singh (71, 67, 70, 69) and Himmat Singh Rai (68, 67, 68, 74) 277; Harendra P. Gupta (68, 68, 68, 74) and Vikrant Chopra (66, 70, 68, 74) 278; Mukesh Kumar (70, 66, 72, 71) 279; Anura Rohana (74, 69, 69, 68) 280; Rahil Gangjee (68, 73, 69, 72) 282; S.S.P.
