Kerala women regain title

ANGAMALY: The two were in different leagues altogether. Playing in front of its home crowd, Kerala rose to the occasion smartly and regained the women’s title in the National youth volleyball championship at the St. Joseph’s High School Ground here on Sunday evening.

Captain V. Soumya led from the front as the host brushed aside Tamil Nadu 25-16, 25-9, 25-12 in just 55 minutes to bring the title home after a two-year break.

“It was easier than we had expected,” said Soumya, one of the stars of Kannur University which recently won the varsities’ National title.

The results:

Women’s final: Kerala bt Tamil Nadu 25-16, 25-9, 25-12. Third place: Himachal Pradesh bt Chhattisgarh 25-9, 25-22, 26-24.

Other placings: 5. Maharashtra, 6. West Bangal, 7. Andhra Pradesh, 8. Karnataka.

Third place: Men: Haryana bt Uttar Pradesh 17-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-18.

Other placings: 5. Karnataka, 6. Goa, 7. Rajasthan, 8. Andhra Pradesh.

Saturday’s late result: Men’ semifinal: Kerala bt Haryana 22-25, 25-14, 25-20, 19-25, 15-12.
