Kerala women make the grade

VISAKHAPATNAM: Last year’s winner Kerala women took the second spot among the three qualifiers from Pool A while reaching the quarterfinals of the 57th senior National volleyball championships at the Port stadium here on Tuesday.

West Bengal took the top spot and host Andhra Pradesh was third when points scored by them in matches decided the placings after three teams finished with two wins each.

Railways, with three wins, had already entered the quarterfinals from Pool B, followed by Karnataka with two wins and Tamil Nadu with one win.

In the men’s section, Andhra Pradesh men defeated Chandigarh in straight sets to top Pool C with an all-win record and enter the quarterfinals play-off round.



TN tops pool

Tamil Nadu topped Pool B with an all-win record. It prevailed over Punjab 25-19, 25-20, 22-25, 25-27, 20-18.

Kerala, with two wins, and Punjab (one win) also entered the last eight from this pool.
