Indian team to get extra security

Karachi: The Indian cricket team will have extra security cover in place during the Asia Cup here with the Karachi Police planning to deploy two dozen commandos to prevent over-enthusiastic fans from mobbing Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men.

Karachi’s police chief Babar Khattak said additional elite commandos would be deputed to ensure round-the-clock security for the Indian team.

“The Indian players are popular and very recognisable in comparison to the other participating teams. So besides the normal security cover we are providing for other teams we have deputed around 20 additional elite police commandos with the Indians,” Khattak said.

The Indian team will have its first practice session on Monday before taking on arch-rival Pakistan on June 26 here.

“We have been instructed to have a strong security level for the Indian players and we will ensure they have a comfortable stay in Karachi,” Khattak said.

Another police official said they were making required arrangements for the enthusiastic cricket fans at the hotel and the ground as well.

“We have made adequate arrangements for them,” he said.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is leaving no stone unturned to arrange an incident-free Asia Cup at a time when some Australian and England cricketers are reportedly threatening to boycott the Champions Trophy to be held here in September.

“We know very well how important it is to use the Asia Cup to have a proper security cover implementation that we intend to have for the Champions Trophy as well,” a PCB official said. — PTI
