Indian girls fail to qualify

NEW DELHI: China defeated India 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the Asia-Oceania Junior Fed Cup girls’ under-16 tennis tournament in Bangkok on Thursday.

With the defeat, India failed to qualify for the World Group final to be staged in Mexico in September.

Rousing start

Ratnika Batra gave a rousing start by dropping only a solitary game in the first singles against Xin Wen. However, Yi Zhong played a key role for China thereafter winning both her singles and doubles.

India’s best bet, Rashmi Teltumbe was restricted to the doubles, but could not pull her weight.

Uzbekistan, Chinese Taipei, China and Korea made the grade by winning the quarterfinals.

India will play second seed Japan in the first of the positional matches on Friday. Third-seeded Australia and the fourth-seeded Thailand also lost their quarterfinals and were reduced to fighting for the fifth to eighth places.

Over the last three weeks, the Indian boys’ under-14 and under-16 teams had qualified while both the girls’ teams have failed.

The results: China bt India 2-1 (Xin Wen lost to Ratnika Batra 0-6, 1-6; Yi Zhong bt Rishika Sunkara 7-5, 6-2; Xi Bai and Yi Zhong bt Ratnika and Rashmi Teltumbe 7-6(2), 6-3).
