Impressive show by Indian paddlers

NEW DELHI: Indian junior and cadet players collected a team gold medal, a silver, a bronze and an individual silver in the ITTF China junior circuit table tennis tournament at Taiyuan, China, on Monday.

According to information available with the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) here on Tuesday, India ‘A’ defeated Egypt 3-2 to win the junior boys team gold.

Earlier, the team consisting of V. Nitin and Ramesh Venkatramanan beat India ‘B’ comprising Sourav Saha and Harmeet Desai 3-2 in the semifinals.

In the five-team girls’ round-robin league, India ‘B’ represented by Shreya Ghosh and Charvi Kawle took the bronze, behind China and Hong Kong. In fact, India ‘B’ upstaged India ‘A’ which included Vrushali Prasade and Mallika Bhandarkar 3-2.

In the cadet girls’ final, the Indian team comprising N. Priya and Monika Batra lost to Singapore 0-3 and finished second.

In the individual events, Harmeet Desai took the junior boys’ silver. Harmeet lost in the final to Chinese Taipei’s Wang Li Chung-Yi.

Monika Batra reached the girls’ semifinals and lost to top-seeded Singaporean Li Isabelle Siyun in seven games.

Similarly, Rajiv Sarkar made it to the cadet boys’ semifinals before losing to top-seeded Egyptian Omar Bedair in straight games.
