Horse : Hyderabad to host Invitation Cup

HYDERABAD: The highlight of the Hyderabad racing season (beginning on July 22) will be the Indian Turf Invitation Cup, to be run here on October 25. It will carry stakesmoney of Rs. 1 crore. The Super Mile, Stayers and Sprinters events, each worth Rs. 25 lakhs, will also be staged on the same day.

The Hyderabad Race Club (HRC) will add four more races, each worth a million, also on the same day, making it an exciting fare.

Addressing a press conference, HRC Chairman R. Surender Reddy said the added money for the President of India Gold Cup (Grade I) would be Rs. 2 million and Rs. 3 million for the Golconda Textiles Deccan Derby.

Announcing some innovations, he said new off course tote centres at A. S. Rao Nagar, Secunderabad and at Guntur had become functional.

The Vijayawada centre is set for expansion with an air-conditioned hall to be added. Other tote centres would be air-conditioned over a period of time. Two more centres are planned for Rajahmundry and Nellore.

A second equine swimming pool of international standards is planned at Malakpet. With a view to provide better facilities for members and patrons, there is a proposal to combine the Members’ and Grand stands. New caterers will be introduced for beverages, fruit juices and salads.

A timer is planned that will display start to finish time and show positions of the front three runners on the screen.

The current and previous body weights of horses will also be displayed, both on the screen and the official race card. The computerised system will be upgraded to support kiosks, hand held terminals and cash card betting.

Arrangements have been made with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to drain excessive storm water during the monsoon, into the Musi River. Many ponds have been dug up inside the track area for rain water harvesting, which would help recharge ground water.
