Hat-trick by Ashok Kumar

Chennai: A hat-trick by centre forward Ashok Kumar gave ICF a 4-0 win over Calicut’s Universal FC in the first round of the Don Bosco-Fr. McFerran Trophy football tournament here on Saturday.

ICF took the lead in the 35th minute, Ashok diving to head home Venkatesan’s cross from the left flank. Ten minutes into the second half, Jegan Senior, one of two Jegans in ICF’s midfield received the ball on the right side of the penalty box and rolled it across the face of goal for Ashok to complete a simple tap-in.

It was soon three-nil, Jegan Junior slotting in from close range a low cross from right winger Suresh Kumar.

J. Auxiano, who replaced Jegan Senior, earned his side a penalty three minutes from time, tripped by centre half Riyas after he had forced his way into the box from the right. Ashok capped his efficient display with an emphatic spot kick, struck cleanly into the top right corner.

Earlier, Bangalore DFA recovered from a 3-0 deficit to beat Don Bosco Annai Youth 5-3.

Big win for St. Bede’s ‘A’

St. Bede’s ‘A’ (Tamil Nadu) beat Shreyas High School (Baroda) by 128 runs in the pre-quarterfinals of the BCCI all-India inter-schools tournament for the Polly Umrigar Trophy in Mumbai on Saturday.

Opener B. Ananth scored an unbeaten 123 (146b, 9x4s) and B. Aparjith also an unbeaten 120 (125 balls, 9x4s, 1x6). Ananth and Aparjith put on 246 for the third wicket.

Jamal scores hat-trick

Jamal’s hat-trick was the highlight of PSG Arts College (Coimbatore)’s 5-1 win over Muthaiammal College (Salem) in the super league match of the Rev. Fr. Murphy memorial football tournament at Loyola here on Saturday.

Vinoth and Arun scored the remaining two goals. For Muthaiammal, Tunden Wank Chak found the target.

Sharmila wins title

A. Sharmila triumphed in the girls’ under-14 category of the Nungambakkam Club State-ranking tennis tournament, defeating under-12 champion Pragati Nataraj 6-3, 6-2 in the final.

Hukku on song

Shikar Hukku played a captain’s innings to secure a four-wicket win and a semifinal spot for St. John’s ES & JC in the Sacred Heart city schools under-14 tournament.

The scores: Sir Sivasamy Kalalaya 92 in 29.3 overs (Karthik 32, C. Asuthosh three for 12) lost to St. John’s ES & JC 93 for six in 28.1 overs (Shikar Hukku 61 n.o.).
