Antalya (Turkey): World Under-10 chess champion Girish Koushik won his first round game, beating Kantharali Onat of Turkey in the 2007 World Youth chess championship here on Sunday.

Sixty-two Indians are competing in this annual championship.

In the under-18 section, second-seeded Kiran Manisha Mohanty got a point, beating Victoria Avdeeva. R. Preethi, in the same section, made no mistake against Aliva Homa of Iran.

P. Uthra and C.R. Varsha posted wins in the under-16 section, beating Inaz Emhemed of Libya and Nur Lantysy Shahozi of Kyrgyzstan respectively. P. Preethi, in the under-8 girls, and Vidit Gujarathi (under-14) got free points as their opponents did not turn up.

Revanth Reddy, M.R. Lalith Babu and Pranav Shetty lost their first round matches in their respective sections. In the under-14 boys’ section, S.P. Sethuraman and Mehar Chinna Reddy began well with first round victories against their opponents.

The championship got off to a chaotic start when nearly two thousand players and accompanying persons were barred from entering the venue. Probably, the organisers lack knowledgeable arbiters as there were a lot of errors in the pairing lists.
