Ganguly joins Sandipan at the top

NEW DELHI: National champion Surya Shekhar Ganguly scored an important victory over Vietnam’s Le Quang Liem and joined teammate Sandipan Chanda in the lead at 5.5 points after a highly fruitful seventh round for the Indians in the Asian chess championship at Subic, Olongapo City, in the Philippines, on Tuesday.

After Sandipan drew with Vietnam’s Dao Thien Hai in 46 moves, Ganguly won in 58 moves to ensure the presence of two Indians at the top.

Among the ladies, Swati Ghate and Tania Sachdev drew their games to stay at 4.5 points while Eesha Karavade joined them after beating Iran’s Atousa Pourkashiyan. With the top five boards ending in draws, there was no change in the leading positions. China’s Ju Wenjun, Zhang Ziaowen and Ding Yixin led with 5.5 points.
