Full points for Punjab

MOHALI: Delhi frittered away a solid start provided by Aakash Chopra and Gautam Gambhir as its middle order collapsed in the face of mounting run-rate and lost to Punjab by 24 runs in the North Zone one-day league cricket match here on Friday.

Young Delhi captain Shikhar Dhawan showed raw nerves in taking decisions. Delhi had done well to contain Punjab after the host had a flying start and posted 150 runs in the 31st over, but in the end, Dhawan put his pace bowlers on a pitch that had low bounce.

Left-armer Ashish Nehra was hit for 21 runs in the final over as Punjab made 242 for nine in 50 overs.

Good start

Delhi could not have asked for a better start. Chopra and Gambhir gathered runs in ones and twos at the start and both opened their blades to some delightful boundaries as Delhi raced to the 100-run mark before Gambhir was run out.

Dhawan was trapped leg before by Gagandeep Singh and Chopra (57, 100b) also fell trying to go for an ambitious shot in the mid-off region. Delhi was now 112 for three after being 100 without loss.

As the wickets fell at regular intervals and the asking rate kept on mounting, the Delhi middle order gave up the fight without much resistance.

Meanwhile at Chandigarh, Himachal and Haryana shared the points as the match was abandoned due to unplayable conditions.

The scores: At Mohali: Punjab 242 for nine in 50 overs (Karan Goel 84) bt Delhi 218 for nine in 50 overs (Aakash Chopra 57, Gautam Gambhir 43).

At Chandigarh: Haryana vs. Himachal match abandoned due to slushy outfield and wet pitch.

At Patiala: Twenty20 match: J & K147 for eight in 20 overs (D. Mahajan 51, A. Bhatt 41, Yashpal Singh three for 28 bt Services 93 in 16.1 overs (I. Khan 31, Abid Nabi four for 21).
