Chargers wins Deccan Cup

HYDERABAD: Deccan Chargers claimed the inaugural Deccan T20 Cup championship with a four-wicket win over Orissa in the final under lights at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium on Monday night.

Chasing a challenging target of 183, Chargers meant business straightaway with opener T. Suman playing an aggressive innings (57, 41b, 9x4, 1x6). With a subdued D.B. Ravi Teja for company, he put on 84 for the first wicket.

Then it was the turn of Ravi Teja (46, 29b, 5x4, 1x6) to open up and he pulled Dibhudatta Panda for a huge six and played some exquisite strokes on either side of the wicket before he also gave a simple return catch to Rakesh Mohanty. India discard Y. Venugopala Rao (48, 23 balls, 5 x 6) also came good.

The huge sixes were a treat to watch and the winning stroke —a flat six over mid-wicket by Ashish Reddy off Rakesh Mohanty’s first ball of the last over when six runs were needed was a fitting finale.

Earlier, Orissa scored 182 for nine thanks primarily to Nataraj Behera (42, 22b, 6x4, 1x6) and S. Biplab (44, 21b, 3x4, 3x6). But what really propped up the total was the cameo from lower-order batsman Lagnajit Samal (32 not out, 17b, 4x4, 1x6).

The scores: Orissa 182 for seven (B. Natraj 42, S. Biplab 44, Lagnajit Samal 32 not out) lost to Deccan Chargers 183 for six in 19.1 overs (T. Suman 57, D.B. Ravi Teja 46, Y. Venugopala Rao 48).
