BSF enters super-league

NEW DELHI: A goal each by Sushil Kumar and Mandeep Singh helped Border Security Force (BSF) beat Army XI 2-1, after trailing 0-1 at half-time, in the 44th Nehru hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium here on Monday.

S. Arumugam had put the Army team in the lead in the 29th minute. However, Sushil and Mandeep struck two goals in the space of three minutes on resumption to clinch the contest for BSF and with it a place in the super-league.

The IHF Under-21 team and Punjab National Bank XI were the other teams to clinch a berth in the super-league.

The IHF team beat South Central Railway 4-1 after leading 2-1 at the interval. Arjun Anil, Parmod Dhir, Danish Mustaba and Jujhar Singh scored for the IHF outfit. Abdul sounded the boards for SCR in the fourth minute but the team could not respond to the goals scored by the under-21 team.

Punjab National Bank recorded a 2-1 triumph over Air India. Yudhveer and Navdeep Singh scored for the winner. Joga Singh reduced the margin for Air India.

In the super-league, Punjab National Bank and Punjab and Sind Bank have been clubbed with direct entrants Indian Oil and Bharat Petroleum in group ‘A’.

In the other group, BSF and IHF Under-21 have been joined by Namdhari XI and Indian Airlines. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semifinals. — Special Correspondent
