Asif hearing ends, decision awaited

Mumbai: The IPL Tribunal concluded its hearing into the doping case involving Pakistan seamer Mohammad Asif here today.

But the tribunal, comprising Sunil Gavaskar, Dr. Ravi Bapat and lawyer Shishir Gupte, has not arrived at any decision. Lawyers representing the International Cricket Council (ICC) and Asif were also present at the hearing.

“We have concluded the hearing, but have not taken a decision,” said Mr. Gupte.

Asif, who represented Delhi Daredevils in the IPL, was the only player who tested positive for steroid nandrolone in the inaugural year of the Twenty20 competition.

Neither IPL nor BCCI officials were ready to confirm speculations that Asif had admitted to have consumed the banned substance at the hearing that lasted for close to three hours.

Lalit Modi, IPL Chairman and Commissioner, confirming the conclusion of the hearing said it was for the tribunal to take action. “We have to wait and watch,” he said when asked about the status of Pakistan players in the second season of the IPL. — Special Correspondent
