NEW DELHI: Ankita Bhambri beat Leigh Walsh of Ireland 6-1, 6-1 to move into the third round of the women’s singles event in the World University Games in Bangkok on Saturday. The Indian girl will meet the second-seeded Chinese Taipei player Chan Chin-Wei next.
India had a disappointing day elsewhere in the Games barring the progress of 800m runner A. Vijila.
The Kerala girl finished fifth in her heat with a time of 2:08.51 but made it into the next round as one of the “fastest losers”.
In the men’s 800m, India’s Satnam Singh went out finishing fifth in 1:53.01 in his heat won by Algerian Nabil Madi in 1:49.78. Heat 3 produced the fastest qualifiers with Brazilian Fabiano Pecanha clocking a 1:44.60 and Iranian Ehsan Mohajershojaei timing 1:45.90 for the first two places.
Shooters disappoint
In shooting, after the gold-winning feat of Harveen Srao on Friday, India had to take a back-seat. In the women’s air rifle event,
Radhika Barale (393) was 27th in the qualification round while Atmika Jagdhari (384) and Jui Deshmukh (383) finished 64th and 66th respectively.
In team standings India was 16th with a total of 1160.
In the men’s rapid-fire pistol event, Nikhil Singh ended up 25th and last with 508. On day two of men’s trap event, with one more round of 25 completed, Prithviraj Tondaiman (62/75) was 23rd while Sidhartha Pawar (55) was lying 27th.
In men’s skeet, Allan Peoples, with a third-round 24 (out of 25) climbed back to 12th from his overnight 14th position.
Man Singh (66) and Sohrab Gill (63) were hopelessly placed at 22nd and 28th.
In swimming, Rehan Poncha (2:14.08) and V. Abhishek (2:21.72) were eliminated in the heats of the 200m individual medley event.
Sandeep Sejwal clocked 1:07.40 in the 100m breaststroke event to go out.
