Aluva Football Academy to be inaugurated on Aug. 15

After promoting schools football for years with its Mar Athanasius Trophy all-India tournament, Aluva will soon have a new academy.

The Aluva Football Academy, which has come into being through the joint efforts of the Aluva Veterans Football Association and the football fans of Aluva, will be inaugurated by Kerala Fisheries Minister S. Sarma at the Municipal Stadium here at 5 p.m. on August 15. M.O. John, the academy Chairman, will preside over the function.

“Twenty two boys between 12 and 14 years, who were selected from the recent vacation camp, will be given coaching at the academy twice a week,” said former international and Kerala Santosh Trophy coach M.M. Jacob, its General Convener.

“Former Santosh Trophy player C.J. Varghese will be the academy coach but all of us will be there for special sessions. Five new boys will be added to the group every year.”

Apart from training, the selected youngsters will be given free kits, medical facilities and refreshments.

Kerala Football Association President K.M.I. Mather, Aluva MLA A.M. Yusuf, Municipal Chairperson Smitha Gopi and Ernakulam DFA President K. Babu will also attend the academy launch function.

SBT keeps winning

State Bank of Travancore recorded its third straight win in the Thiruvananthapruam district super division football league at the Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday.

SBT blanked Reserve Bank of India 3-0 with Rinil, Rakesh and Jipson scoring the goals.

In another super division match, Titanium overcame Black Arrows 2-1. Ebin Rose scored both the goals for Titanium while Shabin reduced the margin for Black Arrows.

In the ‘A' division league at the Medical College ground, LNCPE continued its winning spree by defeating St. Peter's FC 3-1. In another match, GVJ Academy got the better of St. George FC 2-1 to record its second win in the league.

In ‘C' division at the Central stadium, Fort Young Challengers crushed Udaya FC 4-0.

Badminton tournament

The Savitri Saboo Memorial all-Kerala junior ranking badminton tournament opens at the V.K. Krishna Menon Indoor Stadium, Kozhikode on Thursday.

About 300 players are expected to compete in the event, being held in the age categories of under-19, 16 and 13. The tournament concludes on Sunday.
