All-India BSNL tournament from today

BANGALORE: Karnataka Circle will play host to the all-India BSNL volleyball tournament.

Eighteen men’s and three women’s teams will figure in the five-day long event to be held at the Sree Kanteerava stadium outdoor courts from February 2. The final is slated for February 6.

Tamil Nadu men’s team is the reigning champion with Himachal Pradesh the runner-up. But this time around the host with the recruitment of the talented T.D. Ravikumar, who captained the Indian Youth team in the Asian Youth championship in Colombo (Sri Lanka) in August last year, and Ganesh Rai, formerly of Karnataka State Police (KSP), into its ranks has bolstered its chances.

The teams have been divided into four groups with the toppers from each group heading into the super league. The women’s event will be a round robin league affair — with only Maharashtra, MTNL Delhi and MTNL Mumbai being in contention.

The groupings: Men: Group A: TN, UP (E), MTNL Delhi, Punjab. Group B: Himachal, AP, MP, Uttarachal. Group C: Bihar, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Assam, MTNL Mumbai. Group D: Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Gujarat and J&K.

The Karnataka team: M.G. Hegdekar (captain), T.D. Ravikumar, M. Ganesh Rai, Maruthi G. Nayak, Anil Bernard, Rajesh K Pawar, R.N. Lakshmikantha, T.B. Raghuprasad, Zafer Iqbal, S. Girish Kumar, M.R. Sadashivaradhya, G. Arun Kumar. Coach: C.V. Balaji. Manager: K. Ramesh.
