Algeria knocks out Ivory Coast

LUANDA (Angola): Algeria knocked favourite Ivory Coast out of the African Nations Cup on Sunday.

Algeria twice came from behind to beat the Ivorians 3-2 in extra time. Salomon Kalou scored for Ivory Coast after just four minutes. But Algeria equalised just before half-time through Karim Matmour.

The Ivorians were well on their way to Thursday’s semifinal when substitute Abdelkader Keita scored off a scorching 30 metre shot. However, with just seconds left, defender Madjid Bougherra headed home a soft goal that forced the game into extra time. Two minutes later Hameur Bouazza scored with his first touch as the Ivorian defence was caught ball-watching.

The result: On Sunday: Algeria 3 (Matmour 40, Bougherra 90+2, Bouazza 92) bt Ivory Coast 2 (Kalou 4, Keita 89). — Agencies
