Akash, Nandhidhaa share lead

Akash of Jawahar Vidyalaya, Chennai and former national age-group champion Nandhidhaa of Namakkal are jointly leading the points table after seven rounds in the 3rd Modern Senior Secondary School FIDE-rating chess tournament being played at the school premises on Thursday.

Both Akash and Nandhidhaa had a double win day to sail ahead of others and reach 6.5 points from seven rounds.

Four players, FIDE Master V.A.V. Rajesh, defending champion P. Lokesh, Karthikeyan Murali (all Chennai) and S.S. Manigandan of Madurai are in the tied third place with six points each.

The tournament has not been kind to any of the leaders. Akash defeated lower rated intra-day sole leader Manigandan in 48 moves in a rook ending with minor pieces.

Nandhidhaa who had represented India, outplayed Shashaank in a side variation from the queen pawn opening to be a joint leader.

In the morning, Manigandan of Madurai wrested sole lead with full six points after he won on first board.

Chaithanyaa 5, Ramalingam Karthik 5.5 drew with S. Kaushik 5.5, Vasantha Ruba Varman 5.5 drew with Harihara Sudan 5.5, Jitendria Vel 5.5 drew with Osama Salim 5.5, Nilesh Shankar 5.5 drew with G. Jaswant 5.5, Karthikeyan Murali 6 bt Arjun Bharat 5, S. Siddharth 5.5 drew with Aravindh Chithambaram 5.5, K. Priyadharshan 5.5 bt Srinath Rao 5.

Sixth round: Kaushik lost to Manigandan, Saranya drew with Shashaank, Akash bt Prasannaa, Nandhidhaa bt Kumaran .
