Ajay’s seven-wicket haul goes in vain

KOCHI: Ajay Unni’s seven-wicket haul went in vain as North Zone defeated Central by seven wickets in the Kerala State under-17 inter-zone cricket championship which concluded at St Paul’s College, Kalamassery, on Monday.

The victory helped North finished runner-up in the three-team event. South Zone, which won both its matches, emerged champion.

The scores: Central 132 in 46.4 overs (Jismon James 67 n.o., Mohammed Naseef four for 26) & 160 in 62.4 overs (Hariprasanth 49, Varun Ramachandran 43, Naseef five for 61, Fawaz three for 41) lost to North 246 in 84.2 overs (Fawaz 55, Navaneeth 45, Marzook 35, Ajay Unni seven for 76) & 49 for three in 14.2 overs.

Easy for First Flight

Reghunath (77) helped First Flight defeat Cordiant Sports Foundation by five wickets in a Group ‘A’ match between two Chennai sides in the 57th Cordiant-Pooja all-India cricket tournament at the Tripunithura Palace Oval on Monday.

Earlier, on Sunday, P.V. Manikandan hit a lively 85 (55 balls, 7 x 6, 4 x 4) as Muthoot ECC beat Cordiant by four wickets. The winner of the three-team Group ‘A’ will enter the final.

The scores (Pool A): Cordiant Sports Foundation, Chennai 220 for nine in 45 overs (Arun Paulose 46, Vilas N. Kutty 45, Rizwan 46, Thinakar three for 51) lost to First Flight, Chennai 221 for five in 36.4 overs (Reghunath 77, Thyagarajan 38).

Sunday’s match: Cordiant SF 217 for eight in 45 overs (Vilas N. Kutty 74, S.Siva 38, M.Suresh Kumar three for 32) lost to Muthoot ECC, Ernakulam 219 for six in 40 overs (P.V. Manikandan 85).

Sachin Mohan to lead

Thiruvananthapuram’s Sachin Mohan will lead the Kerala team in the forthcoming Vijay Merchant Trophy all-India under-17 cricket championship’s Plate Group League. Kannur’s Mohammed Naseef is the vice-captain. The team is for the first two matches.
