Abhijeet stuns Persson

NEW DELHI: World junior champion Abhijeet Gupta surprised overnight leader Sweden’s Tiger Hillarp Persson to reach the joint fourth spot in Group ‘C’ of the Corus chess tournament at Wijk aan Zee, in the Netherlands, on Friday.

The 44-move triumph took Abhijeet’s aggregate to 3.5 points, one behind top seed and leader Wesley So.

In another Group ‘C’ game, World junior girls’ champion D. Harika played out 30-move draw with Ali Bitalzadeh of the Netherlands.

In Group ‘B’, top seed K. Sasikiran (2.5) played with white pieces and drew against Ukraine’s Andrei Volokitin (3.5) in 65 moves.

Gata Kamsky (3) lost his first game of the competition after meeting Teimour Radjabov (3.5).

Top seed Vassily Ivanchuk (2.5) drew with Levon Aronian (3.5) in 56 moves while Magnus Carlsen (3) settled for a similar result against leader Sergey Karjakin (4).
