Abhijeet finishes joint fourth; Harika is seventh

NEW DELHI: World junior champion Abhijeet Gupta signed off his campaign in the Corus chess tournament on a high note by defeating Mexico’s Manuel Leon Hoyos for the tied fourth spot in Group ‘C’ at Wijk aan Zee on Sunday.

The 40-move victory raised Abhijeet’s tally to 7.5 points, a score matched by second seeded British David Howell. Top seed Wesley So took a short draw with Howell to win the title with 9.5 points, one ahead of Sweden’s Tiger Hillarp Persson and Russian Anish Giri.

World junior girls’ champion D. Harika drew with Giri in the final round. A tally of six points gave the 10th seeded Harika the seventh spot in the 14-player field.

In Group ‘B’, top seed K. Sasikiran lost to Spain’s Francisco Pons Vallejo to finish with four points. This seventh loss in 13 rounds saw Sasikiran tie for the 13th spot with Dutchman Jan Werle.

Italian Fabiano Caruana won the title with 8.5 points after beating Nigel Short.

In Group ‘A’, Ukraine’s Sergey Karjakin made sure of the crown with eight points after beating fellow overnight leader Leinier Dominguez Perez (7).

Teimour Rajdabov, Levon Aronian and Sergey Movsesian (7.5 each) were involved in drawn encounters. Magnus Carlsen (7), the other overnight leader, lost to China’s Wang Yue.
