Corrections and Clarifications

In a report, "`UP needs modern leadership'" (December 24, 2006), the name of the Acting Director of the Institute of Rural Management was misspelt in the text. (It was right in the photo caption.) It should have been Neelima Khaitan, and not Neelima Khetan.

In "India, Russia to intensify cooperation" (December 23, 2006), the reference to unmanned aerial aircraft has led to confusion. It should have been unmanned aerial vehicle or UAV, which is an aircraft with no onboard pilot. UAVs are currently used for a number of missions, including reconnaissance and attack roles. The acronym UAV has been expanded in some cases to UAVS or Unmanned Aircraft Vehicle System. Also, a weaponised UAV is known as an Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle, or UCAV.

A feature story "Remembering lesser-known heroes" (December 20, 2006) stated that Udham Singh was the assassin of General Dwyer. Brigadier-General Reginald Edward Harry Dyer, and not Dwyer, was infamous for the Amritsar massacre and was the person who ordered his troops to fire on men, women and children at Jallianwala Bagh. He died in England in 1927, of natural causes. The man primarily responsible for causing the tragedy was Sir Michael Francis O'Dwyer (he was no general), the then Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab, who ordered General Dyer into action. O'Dwyer was the man assassinated by Udham Singh on March 13, 1940 (and many years after General Dyer died).
