The statement by Tamil Nadu Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan in the Legislative Assembly that it is now for the LTTE to respond to Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s call to release civilians in the war zone, and seize the opportunity to end hostilities is welcome.

The government has taken a nuanced stand and clearly communicated that both sides need to cooperate if lasting peace is to be established in the troubled island nation.
