Helmet rule

I came by (quite accidentally) a letter on the helmet debate from the famous neurosurgeon Dr. B. Ramamurthi published in these columns on October 4, 1997, which is relevant even now and is therefore worth quoting from again: "There is a controversy in Bangalore over [the] wearing of helmets. It has been proved in the Western countries that crash helmets help minimise the severity of brain injuries. The Indian public and authorities do not seem to be convinced of this. The matter can be approached scientifically. Crash helmets had been in vogue in Chennai for many years until the rule was revoked ... We can have a scientific answer to the question whether crash helmets are protective or not."
