A statesman

R. Venkataraman, who was the President of India between 1987 and 1992, handled the coalition crisis that followed the Congress’ defeat in 1989 with aplomb. The people of Tamil Nadu will remember him forever as one who, as Industries Minister, heralded industrial development in the State. The nation has lost a great statesman.

As a member of both the Kamaraj and the Bhaktavatsalam Ministries, RV was responsible for putting Tamil Nadu on the industrial map of India. As the President of India, he saved the country from the undesirable consequences of the turbulent politics of those years by strictly remaining the Copybook President as he came to be called later.

He had the highest respect for Rajaji. He admired T.T. Krishnamachari and C. Subramaniam. Both C.N. Annadurai and MGR held him in high esteem. RV was a true gentleman.
