Not may are aware that a young woman engineer was instrumental in changing Telco's policy of not recruiting women for their plant in interior Bihar.

However an impulsive postcard from the spirited woman to the Tata Chairman questioning Telco's advertisement displayed in college notice board changed her life.

The young engineer who dashed off that postcard is none other than Sudha Murthy, Chairperson of Infosys Foundation.

The simple and unassuming Ms. Murthy, who was the chief guest at the installation ceremony of chairpersons of Ficci Ladies Organisation (FLO) and Young FLO and their teams here on Saturday, gave a lucid recount of her own life journey.

She recalled that she was upset by the Telco advertisement stating ‘women engineers need not apply'.

It only made her dash off a letter to J.R.D. Tata. “How can a company ahead of its time impose such restrictions on women?” was her poser.

The postcard not only got her an interview call but a job eventually after she proved her competence in the technical interview and convinced the management to create facilities like toilets for women rather than depriving qualified women of a job.

Ms. Murthy wanted the women to believe in themselves and unleash the enormous power in them to achieve their vision.

Tata's advice

Ms. Murthy also said the advice she got from J.R.D. Tata when she left her job to assist her husband Narayana Murthy's start up company Infosys changed her life.

He told her to remember that no one was owner of money. “You are only trustee of money and it always changes hands. When you are successful, give it back to society that gave you so much goodwill. His words changed my life,” the social worker and philanthropist said.

Earlier she installed Aparana Reddy (Pinky Reddy) as new FLO chairperson and Swapna Cherukuri, as YFLO chairperson.

Chandana Chakraborty, outgoing chairperson of FLO presented her report.
