Vijayamma, party legislators to launch indefinite fast today

YSR Congress party honorary president Y.S. Vijayamma and the party’s MLAs and MLCs will launch an indefinite fast on Tuesday to protest against power tariff hike and anti-people policies of the State government.

A decision to this effect was taken at the party’s Political Affairs Committee, which met here on Monday.

Briefing the reporters later, senior party leader Konathala Ramakrishna said the lack of foresight on part of the State government led to the present crisis on power sector front. He said power tariff was not hiked when YSR was the Chief Minister, but the people were burdened to the tune of Rs. 32,000 crore in the last four years.

He criticised TDP for not having supported the no-confidence motion against the State government in the recent Assembly session. Things would have been different had the main Opposition voted against the government. There was no meaning in taking up fasts now after supporting the government in the Assembly, he added.

He said Ms. Vijayamma and other party leaders would pay tributes to YSR at Punjagutta and martyrs of Basheerbagh firing before proceeding to New MLA Quarters to sit on indefinite fast.

He said the other programmes including dharnas in all Assembly constituencies on April 3 and holding people’s ballot from April 5 to 13 would continue.
