Verdict against UDF misrule: CPI(M)

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Thursday termed the victory of the Left Democratic Front in local body elections in Kerala as a "strong rejection of the Oommen Chandy Government and its misrule."

Hailing the poll verdict that gave the LDF all the five city corporations, 70 per cent of gram panchayat seats, 80 per cent of the block panchayat seats and 57 per cent of the municipalities the CPI (M) Polit Bureau congratulated the party's Kerala unit and the LDF for the "magnificent victory."

The party charged that the Congress and the United Democratic Front desperately tried to salvage their position by entering into an understanding with the BJP in many places. "This has further discredited the UDF and brought into question the secular commitment of the Congress party in Kerala,'' a statement said.

The party said that with this success, the way had been opened for revitalising the panchayat system.
