Vaiko sticks to stand on POTA

CHENNAI Oct. 22. Though the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary, Vaiko, detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA), has welcomed the Central Government's decision to amend the act to empower the review committees to make their decision binding on the Centre and the State Governments, he stuck to his view that the Act should be totally repealed.

In a statement here today, Mr. Vaiko said that even when the Prevention of Terrorism Bill was discussed in the NDA meeting, he vehemently opposed it and expressed his views that it would be used to stifle the voice of the Opposition.

His fears came true when some Opposition leaders in Tamil Nadu were arrested under the Act, the statement added.
