UAE amnesty for illegal expatriates

Dubai Dec. 25. The UAE has announced an amnesty for illegal expatriates to either regularise their stay or leave the country without punishment within four months.

The Ministry of Interior on Tuesday night decided to pardon expatriates who have been residing illegally in violation of immigration laws, the official WAM news agency said. The violators will be allowed to leave the country without paying fines during a four-month grace period, starting January 1.

The Indian consulate in Dubai had started preparations six months ago in anticipation of the declaration.

According to the Indian Consul-General, George Joseph, some 40,000 illegal expatriates from India are expected to avail themselves of the offer.
