`Treat me or allow me to die'

CHHINDWARA, AUG. 21. A poverty-stricken and polio-affected teenager in this district has requested the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, to arrange for the treatment of her tumour, else allow her to die.

Anita, a 14-year-old resident of Parasia township's Ward Number 12, recently submitted a letter to the President through the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, M.M. Marawi.

``The pain is unbearable but doctors have said the treatment will cost about Rs. 70,000,'' says Ms. Anita.

Her mother is no more and her father abandoned the girl at the residence of her paternal grandparents.

Social welfare organisations have begun comprehensive efforts to gather funds for treatment.
