Birthday celebrations of a 23-year-old Bhuvanagiri resident studying MBBS in Russia turned tragic when he got drowned at a lake there on Friday.

Gujja Naveen Kumar had gone to study at Orenburg Medical College in 2012. He was out to celebrate his birthday at a lake in Stavropol, along with a group of friends, when he got drowned. His family was informed about the incident by Naveen’s friends late on Friday. “He was six months away from graduating. For holidays, the students usually come back home. Since they are close to graduation, they decided to stay put and take a tour,” said Racharla Ramesh, the boy’s uncle.

The body was fished out and autopsied. Post-mortem report revealed that Naveen had died of a cardiac arrest, Mr. Ramesh said, while adding that Naveen could swim.

The mortal remains are expected to arrive in Hyderabad on Tuesday morning.
