YSR inaugurates cattle show

TIRUPATI: A massive cattle show jointly being organised in Tirupati by the Central and State Governments got off to a colourful start with Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy briefly riding a double bullock-cart to mark the inauguration of the show.

About 300 bovines from the four southern states and Pondicherry besides Maharashtra are stabled in the sprawling site specially developed for the purpose on the Tirupati-Tiruchanur road. Some of the breeds on display are Ongole, Punganur, Kangeyan, Murrah, Holstein Fresien cross, Jersey, Jersey Cross, Khillari, Hallikar, Deoni etc.

The expo being held in Andhra Pradesh after a gap of twenty years is aimed at reflecting the breed development in cattle, identify superior breeding bulls for National Breeding Grid, bringing together breeders to improve breeding and management methods through exchange of views, identifying prospective breeding bulls and elite mothers by organising calf rallys and milk yield competitions, conducting rythu sadassus to increase awareness among farmers. They are also provided with free insurance coverage during their stay here. Rs. five lakh worth of prizes are to be distributed among the prize winning bovines.
