CHENNAI: A 20-year-old youth has died of his injuries after he was beaten up for making sexual advances toward a 46-year-old woman.

C. Sylendra Babu, Joint Commissioner of Police, North, said that M. Vasu, the youth, misbehaved with Manjula (46), of Gandhiji Street in Vyasarpadi, working as a maidservant in the area, on August 2. He was reportedly under the influence of alcohol.

Irked by his advances, Manjula told him to desist, but Vasu did not. The irate woman called her two daughters and two sons — Suba (25), Soundari (23), sons Lucas (27) and Velankanni (19, who beat up Vasu after an argument.

He fell unconscious and was admitted to the Stanley Medical College hospital, following which Vasu's father, Mathiyazhagan (45), filed a complaint with the police, Mr. Babu said.

The Sembium police initially registered a case under section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), but following his death on Thursday, altered it to section 302 (murder).

Police have arrested the woman and her sons and daughters and remanded them to judicial custody, Mr. Babu added.
