Kanyakumari: This district now has one more tourist attraction, following the setting up of a `Wax Museum,' first of its kind in India, at the Lands End — Kanyakumari.

The management of a seaside amusement park, Baywatch, based at Kanyakumari has set up the wax museum to attract domestic and foreign tourists. Wax models of celebrities such as Mata Amritanandamayi, singer Yesudas, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, former Chief Ministers of Kerala, E.K. Nayanar and Karunakaran, cine actors Madhu, Mammootty and Mohanlal are on display at the museum.

Speaking to The Hindu , the Chairman of Sree Bhadra Parks & Resorts Limited, K.N. Narayanan Nampoothripad said the concept of putting on display wax models of famous persons was first introduced by Madame Tussauds, an amusement firm, in London. It has five branches all over the world, including one in Hong Kong, which was opened recently.

All the wax models in Baywatch amusement park were made by Sunil of Kayankulam in Kerala who has been making such wax models for the last seven years. As the cost of making one model was around Rs.50,000, it was decided to collect a nominal entry fee to the wax museum.

"Besides the wax museum, Baywatch also has wave pool, crazy chairs, bumping cars, rain ramba, sunset view tower etc. We aim to have at least 50 wax models during the course of next year. The Health Minister, N. Thalavai Sundaram, will inaugurate the wax museum on Saturday, he said.
