Yeomen service

Sir, — I refer to the article "Restructuring postal services" (Dec. 17). To say that promoting monopoly of the postal department does not suit the times is incorrect. In India, the postal department is a service sector, not commercial. Tracing undecipherable addresses, written by semi-literate letter-writers, is its hallmark. The delivery staff in post offices are expected to know the personal and exact identity of the public and hand over the mail to the correct person. Many a time, their help is sought by private agencies too. Post office staff are definitely courteous though they may not be `customer-friendly'. Though the postal department appears to charge more for some transactions, these are accepted as authentic even in courts of law.
