Writers’ association opposes Kavuthi mining project

Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers and Artists Association (TNPWAA) passed a resolution opposing the Kavuthimalai Iron Ore Mining Project, at the Tiruvannamalai

branch-level general body meeting, held here on Sunday.

The resolution states that Tamil Nadu Iron Mining Corporation (TIMCO), an entity led by Jindal Group, has applied for a licence to mine iron ore in the Kavuthi and Vediyappan hills, near Tiruvannamalai, and the Supreme Court-appointed Central Empowered Committee has rejected the application in 2008 following resistance from local communities and environmentalists. The District Collector M. Rajendran’s strong report based on public hearing helped to stall the project.

“But as the company has come up with a fresh application, P.V. Jayakrishnan, Chairman of Central Empowered Committee has visited the hills recently. If the project is cleared it would affect the delicate ecosystem, the livelihood of communities, water table and agriculture. Hence the TNPWAA urges the State and district administration to not to allow the project,” the resolution stated.

S. Karuna, State Deputy General Secretary of the organisation said, “The Environment Impact Assessment of the original project, filed in 2008, stated that 2.2 lakh trees would be felled and the project would create several health hazards”.
