World Bank team inspects UGD, dedicated water supply projects

A three-member team from the World Bank inspected various works being carried out under the Underground Drainage (UGD) project, Mettur – Salem Dedicated Water Supply Scheme and Thirumanimutharu River project in the city on Tuesday.

The team members Raghu Kesavan, senior infrastructure specialist, Mohan, senior infrastructure engineer, and Reddy, environment consultant, visited Nagaramalai Adivaram where work was on to lay pipelines under Pack II of Mettur – Salem Dedicated Water Supply Scheme. The scheme was implemented at a total cost of Rs. 315.54 crore of which the World Bank was funding Rs. 285.54 crore and the Corporation Rs. 35 crore.

Later the team visited the construction activity of a sump house in Alagapuram Pudur that has a capacity of three lakh litres. The team also inspected Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), being constructed at four places Anaimedu, Vellakuttai, Vandipet and Mankuttai, under the UGD scheme that was implemented at a cost of Rs. 149.39 crore of which the World Bank’s contribution is Rs. 70.54 crore. The team on Monday visited Thottilpatti, Komarankadu and Pazhakaranur, where work was in progress to construct booster stations and ridge sump.

Later the team held meeting with civic body officials and discussed various aspects of completing the projects. Sources said that the team expressed concern over the tardy progress in carrying out the work and questioned the officials over poor workforce at the site.

The team asked officials to expedite the works so that the projects are completed in time.

D. Rajendran, Senior Assistant vice-president, Tamil Nadu Urban Development Project III (TNUDP), R.A. Arun Justin, Deputy Manager, Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited (TNUIFSL), Commissioner M. Ashokan, Executive Engineers Kamaraj, S. Venkatesan, engineers and other officials were present.
