Work on Koodankulam main plant from tomorrow

TIRUNELVELI March 29. The first pour of concrete to commence work on the main plant of the Rs. 14,000-crore Koodankulam nuclear power project will be held at the plant site, along the Kanyakumari coast on Sunday.

The Deputy Minister for Atomic Energy of the Russian Federation, E.A. Reshetnikov, the Secretary of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, Anil Kakodkar, the Chairman and Managing Director of the Nuclear Power Corporation of India, V.K. Chaturvedi, and other top dignitaries and scientists from both the countries will participate.

The Director-General of the joint stock company of Russian Federation `Atomstoyexport', which was involved in preparation of the detailed project report, V.V. Kozlov, is also expected to participate. The commencement of the main plant construction works marked the completion of the pre-project activities, which began last year.

Meanwhile a five-member team of the Russian specialists led by A.V. Kvasha, technical director and leader (in-charge) of the Koodankulam project from Russia, arrived at the main plant site a few days ago.

This team is expected to stay there for a few months to monitor the ongoing works.
