TIRUPATI: About 300 women, mostly Muslims, on Monday squatted in front of the office of the Revenue Divisional Officer here and raised slogans decrying the callous attitude of the authorities concerned in distributing to them house site pattas.

They authorities tried to pacify them but the women continued their protest. The women said the authorities had failed to sort out their long-standing demand. The Tirupati Muslims Welfare Association which is leading the campaign threatened to intensify its stir if the Government failed to respond to their demand.

Naidu arrives

Meanwhile, TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu arrived in his Kuppam constituency on a two-day visit. Naidu's visit after a gap of about six months assumes importance in the context of note of discord struck by the district party veteran and Kuppam's former MLA Rangaswamy Naidu resenting his alleged sidelining by the party supremo.

District Congress managers nearly succeeded in roping into the party fold a disgruntled Mr. Rangaswamy to weaken the TDP in Mr. Naidu's strong fortress.

Landing at Kuppam specifically on a fire-fighting mission, Mr. Naidu was said to have immediately closeted with Mr. Rangaswamy.

He interacted with district and Kuppam party leaders to get a feedback on the goings-on in the district both on political and Government fronts. After an overnight stay at Kuppam, he is expected to meet party's rank and file for a final round of discussion on Tuesday morning.

He is expected to participate in Saibaba's 80th birthday celebrations at Puttaparthi on Wednesday.
