The State government will write to the Centre to conduct the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) only once a year, School Education Minister K.A. Sengottaiyan said here on Sunday.
The Minister told reporters that the Centre was yet to officially communicate the decision to conduct the test twice a year for admission to medical colleges. He had learnt about the Centre’s decision only from the newspapers. As and when the Centre communicated the decision, the State would write to the Centre in this regard.
The State government would soon establish 412 centres across the State to train Plus Two students in government schools to take NEET. The classes would be held for an hour, after school hours on working days, and for three hours during weekends.
The government was also looking at imparting skill development training for Plus Two students. “The objective of the programme is to make students employment-ready by training them in 12 trades. This will start next year and is necessary because around eight lakh engineers across the country are unemployed.”
Mr. Sengottaiyan also spoke about the government’s plan to engage 500 Chartered Accountants to train Plus Two students to take the first level of the CA examination.
“The target is to train 20,000 government school students and the first batch of training for 2,700 students will begin soon in Erode.”
