Why this shuffle?

Sir, — Though making changes in the Cabinet and allocating portfolios to Ministers is the prerogative of the Prime Minister, the reshuffle this time raises many questions. If choosing men of proven intellect and commitment for appointment to key positions was the aim of the Prime Minister, probably he would not have asked Arun Jaitley — a rare personality who commands respect from all quarters for his learning, wisdom, commitment and for sincerely piloting changes in the legal system aiming at fast-track justice — to take up a party position.

The same is the case with moving Jaswant Singh, whose stint as External Affairs Minister was exemplary, to the Finance Ministry. Though popular perception demanded a change of guard at the Finance Ministry and wanted relief from the ``taxman'' Yashwant Sinha, the Prime Minister could have found a suitable alternative instead of disturbing Mr. Singh.
