Weaving parks to get modern looms

Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE: For many powerloom weavers in the decentralised sector in the region, modernising their units and selling in international markets will soon be a reality. The three weaving parks for small weavers, which will start functioning in the State next year, have begun formulating plans to buy modern machinery and to sell fabric to overseas buyers.

Tie-up

The aim is to help the small weavers modernise their units through joint efforts.

One such is the tie-up with the Italian company, Carrera Holdings Inc.

According to Chairman and Managing Director of Cauvery Hi-Tech Weaving Park, M.S. Mathivanan, Carrera Holdings is developing a modern shuttleless loom to suit Indian conditions.

Technol, a Belgium company, will manufacture the looms and 200 will be supplied to the parks in February. Over 2,000 modern looms will be installed in the parks at Palladam, Komarapalayam and Andipatti.

Carrera will also buy at least 30 per cent of the fabric made with its looms. This will go up if the fabric meets the quality requirements of the company, adds Mr. Mathivanan.
